Your chain link fence, like the rest of your property in the Greater Toronto Area, is an investment of your time and money. To get the most out of your dollar, however, you need to pay a little attention to your investment every once in a while to make sure it isn’t damaged or losing its value in some way.

No matter if you have a large chain link fence that protects a commercial property, or a small chain link fence to divide your property, you should periodically make a complete inspection of your fencing.

WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR WHEN INSPECTING MY FENCE?

Chain link fences are pretty sturdy but the primary things you’ll be looking for are any damage to the protective covering for your fence (typically its paint or vinyl covering) and if any rust has formed on the metal.

Just like your car or any other metal object you own, rust happens when metal is exposed to oxygen and moisture for a long time. If water is present, oxygen can chemically combine with metals like iron to create rust, effectively eating away at things like fences at an atomic level. That coat of paint or vinyl that might be covering your chain link fence does more than make it look nice. They keep moisture away from the iron in your chain link fence, keeping it it from rusting.

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT PROBLEMS I SEE?

The best way to keep moisture away from your fence is to make sure the coating on your fence is complete. Even a small break in its protection can let moisture in to corrode the metal. Any problems should be fixed quickly.

If there is any rust, you should deal with it immediately. One problem with chemical reactions like rusting is that they cannot be reversed. They can only be stopped. Any rust that has formed should be sanded off the metal and the metal should be treated with an anti-rusting solution before the paint is reapplied.

YOU WILL NOT EXPERIENCE THESE PROBLEMS WITH A FENCE FROM CITY FENCE

The above problems are quite frustrating to deal with, at City Fence; we understand that these problems are quite frustrating. That is why we use chain link fencing that has a galvanized coating to reduce the risk of rust.
