5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Fence

Has your commercial or industrial fence seen better days? If so, you must decide whether it can be repaired or requires replacement. Here are five signs it’s time to replace your fence.

1. Your wood fence is rotten

If the fencing around your business is made of wood, you must take special maintenance measures to prevent it from rotting or becoming infested with pests. Without annual staining or painting, a wooden fence can splinter or become riddled with holes. The posts can also become soft and weak. If your fence has started to rot, it’s best to replace it with a durable chain link fence. Chain link fences are less expensive than wood, and the material lasts for many years with minimal maintenance.

2. Your iron fence is rusting

Iron, like wood, requires regular fencing maintenance. Repairing chips and painting scuffs can prevent your ornamental iron fence from corroding and rusting. Significant corrosion can severely compromise your fence’s ability to secure your property. If yours is rusting away, it’s probably time to replace it.

3. Your fence is leaning

A leaning fence often indicates an underlying problem, like incorrect installation. For instance, the fence posts may have been installed too shallowly, or the concrete wasn’t mixed correctly. These issues can be difficult and expensive to repair. Consequently, replacing the fence would likely cost less than trying to prop it back up.

4. Your fence is nearing the end of its lifespan

Whether your fence is made of wood, iron or galvanized steel, all fencing materials have a finite lifespan. For example, if your wood fence is between 15 and 20 years old, continuing to repair it may only prolong the inevitable. Chain link fencing can last up to 30 years, depending on the gauge of the wire and if it’s galvanized or vinyl coated.

5. Over 20 per cent of the fence needs repairs

Most fence builders in Toronto recommend replacing your fence if at least 20 per cent of the total perimeter needs repairing. Of course, you must also compare the cost of repairing the damage versus replacing the entire fence. When in doubt, contact a professional for an accurate estimate.
