6 Ways to Increase the Security of Chain Link Fencing

Though there are many reasons to install a fence around your property, s¬afety and security are among the top reasons.

This is because a properly built fence can deter thieves, vandals and other intruders. Among the various types of fences, chain link is often selected for its durability and affordability. Indeed, it’s an excellent option for adding protection and giving property owners peace of mind.

Enhancing the security of your chain link fence

In terms of security, chain link is an ideal fencing material. However, there are a number of ways to make it more secure, including the following:

1. Make it taller

The higher the fence, the more difficult it will be to climb. Commercial fences should be at least six to eight feet tall.

2. Make it thicker

The thicker the material, the more difficult it will be to cut. Chain link fences can be made with aluminum or galvanized steel; however, steel is thicker and sturdier than aluminum. You can also make your fence thicker by choosing a lower gauge (thicker wire). Use 6 gauge for increased security.

3. Make mesh smaller

The diamond mesh pattern of chain link fencing is available in many size openings, ranging from 1/8 inch to 3 ½ inches. Choose a smaller opening to improve security and durability.

4. Add privacy slats

In addition to smaller mesh openings, you can add slats to existing chain link fences to increase privacy. What’s more, installing privacy slats will make your fence more difficult to climb.

5. Bury it

When installing your fence, make sure to dig down at least two feet into the ground. Burying your fence will prevent intruders from digging a hole and climbing under your fence.

6. Add barbed wire

Adding barbed wire to the top of your fence will help prevent intruders from scaling your fence. Barbed wire should be angled out from the top of your fence in an “L” shape.

In addition to making structural adjustments to your chain link fencing, you can add a fence-mounted vibration sensor cable. This technology involves linking the cable to an alarm system, which ensures that you’ll be notified if anyone tries to tamper with your fence.
